Why outdoor nursery learning plants a lifelong love of nature

We work in partnership with private day nurseries and school nurseries to run forest school sessions for children aged two to five. Sessions are delivered by experienced instructors following an adventure programme packed with ideas, and supported by 10 years of practice in connecting children with nature. The We Are Adventurers EYFS programme is rooted in the forest school ethos.

From barefoot walks to mud kitchens and observing seasonal change, we have an extensive programme of outdoor nursery activities that allow children to connect with the natural world. Learning through play in the great outdoors, our little learners grow in confidence and capability each week.

Our nursery forest school sessions are fully supportive of EYFS: outdoor nursery activities designed to enhance gross and fine motor skills; speech and language, for example through imaginative storytelling and writing; cognitive abilities such as counting bugs, or identifying leaves; social and emotional development can be observed through playing with other children.

Trust our experienced team to deliver the best nursery forest school sessions

We have been running our programme of outdoor nursery activities for more than 10 years, so we know what content works and what doesn’t, how to turn wet weather to our advantage and the ways to coax shy or nervous children into thriving in an outdoor environment.

We know how to adapt and can be flexible with the outdoor space you have – and can even run an adapted forest school programme where the school has no woodland areas! For early years parent and toddler sessions please see our Babes in The Woods programme.

What do we do?

Want to know more about our adventure programme for young children? See our early years FAQs.

  • How long is a course?

EYFS sessions are booked in a minimum of half term blocks with discounted rates for booking multiple blocks. In order to benefit from forest school, it’s important that enough time is given to building a relationship between the instructor and the child and the child and the woodland.

  • Do our staff attend too?

Yes they do. Typically, our groups are up to 16 children. Our leaders guide the programme supported by up to three of your nursery team. For EYFS we operate at a ratio of 1:4 and in our experience, the best way to deliver this is through a combination of experienced leadership supported by familiar faces from the nursery setting. The Adventurers leader will deliver a safety briefing, set out the activity and we ask that the nursery/school team are available to assist with encouragement, toileting and safeguarding.

  • Can you improve our existing forest school provision?

Absolutely! We work with private nurseries and schools in lots of different ways. If you already have a qualified Level 3 forest school leader or someone working towards the qualification, we can mentor them as they establish and create your forest school proposition. Once set up, we can work with you to create a programme of activity, the appropriate risk assessments and help you buy any materials you need.

“Each week, one of the team comes to take a group of children out either within our grounds or to a local woodland. The children build on their knowledge and their confidence from the week before under the careful supervision of the experienced leader.

“At the end of the term, we invite parents to the final session to gather round the campfire and see just how far their children have come in their confidence in being outdoors.”
