Supporting young people’s spirit of adventure
The Duke of Edinburgh program leads to an internationally recognised award which aims to equip young people for adult life, with skills, opening up education and employment opportunities. Aimed at ages 13-24, the award gives participants the chance to learn new skills outside of the boundaries of formal education.
The Duke of Edinburgh program framework covers four areas: voluntary service, skills development, physical recreation and an expedition. WAA offer volunteering opportunities for young people running our after school and holiday clubs. DofE students can work on their skills development with us by learning an outdoor skill such as bushcraft, climbing, canoeing or archery.
We support expedition planning, meeting for weekly planning sessions on the lead up to adventure where we might look at route cards and checking equipment, before practising an overnight camp. The young participants lead their own expedition in the wild, with support from our outdoor leaders.
